AGENCY: KLIP COLLECTIVE | PRODUCTION: KLIP COLLECTIVE / MONOGRAM | ROLE: DESIGN, 3D SCAN, RETOPOLOGY, TEXTURING, SIMULATION, RENDERING
As a part of a travelling exhibition, Klip was commissioned to illustrate the creation and deterioration of the painted terracotta figures found in Xian China. I created an animated sequence of the firing, glazing, painting, and decay of the figure, to be projected on a full size recreation of the iconic Terracotta Warrior.
I needed both the texture decay and the fracturing simulation to be directable and flexible enough to accommodate feedback from both the creative team as well as the historical consultants. I used Substance Designer to create procedural textures and Houdini for the simulations. Both textures and the simulation were controlled by an animated black and white texture map created in After Effects.
